My 98 model did this to me last year. Ran just the way you described and then poof, completely dead. Mine shorted out both the main and relay fusues at the same time. Check and see if the contacts on them are clean. If you can't find them, they are in a little white box under the seat. Also, check that your valve setting is correct, that your sparkplug is showing normal operating colors/deposits upon removal, and that you aren't gettin any vacuum leaks.
Good luck. It should be something fairly easy to correct once you've diagnosed the problem.
